My $0.02 worth:
1) do your own bike work whenever possible;
2) if you do need to subcontract anything, be very specific about what you want done, how you want it done, how much you are willing to pay, and that all original parts are to be returned to you;
3) BF has lots of good advice on how to diagnose mechanical problems. Read up on your particular issue (probably chain, maybe freewheel cogs, as well) before visiting any shop -- knowledge is power.

Interesting side reading: "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." In a couple of scenes, Pirsig cites cases of mechanical abuse/incompetence at "professional" repair shops.
