My experience is limited to use after a bicycle ride, the over-the-knee type that go from ankle to top of the thigh: Mojo Compression Recovery Graduated Compression Thigh Sleeves
I was first turned onto compression sleeves by a doctor who used a much more elaborate setup in his training program for competing in triathlons and later on, also by an orthopedic surgeon who was only talking about the socks. I've been remembering lately to put them on within a few hours of a ride, after which I wear them the rest of the day before going to bed.
Anyone with a swelling problem probably has positive feedback as to their effectiveness but for sports use when there's nothing to actually see, while it seems like a good idea, it's hard to know how effective they actually are an aid in the exercise recovery process (which is why I've been using them), e.g., kind'a getting the blood flowing through the legs by helping overcome gravity, e.g.,
I'm not using compression sleeves that are that tall. I do, however wear compression socks on a pretty much daily basis. Not wearing them for performance benefits, but I have issues with some edema in my legs, and the compression socks do the trick most of the time, Lasix for when I need a little more help. Anyway, I'm mostly comfortable in compression socks like the Dr. Motion variety. They offer a decent amount of compression, my legs feel good all day, and I frequently bike in them as well. Since they don't come above the knee, they do not bother me in the slightest, in fact I toured in them late last summer/into the fall.
No issues with leg/foot cramps, etc. I suspect the calf sleeves, or the variety you picture have a lot more compression that what I find comfortable to wear for an extended period of time. I have one pair of heavy duty compression socks I occasionally wear when flying that will come above the knee. They are terrible to get on, and I can stand them for about the 4 hours or so I need them on the plane, but no more than that. I couldn't imagine trying to bike in them.
