Does anyone have any suggestions? I had a pair of spandex type many years ago with built in chamois but I always felt like it didn't come forward enough

I would suggest, as others have, just to buy the regular bike shorts in a size that fits, then just wear them with whatever loose gym shorts you have laying around. Then when you get over being self conscious, you can leave the loose gym shorts at home.
