It is very hard for me to justify most gardening here in SoCal because there’s so much produce available that if you know where to shop and follow the sales, it’s way cheaper to let the farmers do it. I’m a crazy person with food shopping, it kills me to ever buy anything that’s not on sale. I can’t bring myself to buy cabbage at 50 cents a pound because I know I can get it for 25 cents a pound if I wait for a sale. Even if the entire difference in cost is something like 40 cents for the stupid head of cabbage, lol.
Herbs are cheap too. There is a Mexican supermarket 2 min from my house. Not on sale, dill and mint are $0.69 per bunch, cilantro is $0.30. Sage is hit or miss, basil and chives don’t last long when cut.
I had all this stuff in my garden but it petered out, only the tarragon remains. So my plan was to plant basil, chives, sage. Then it escalated to include dill and mint. It’s nice to have it out in the garden even if the store is 2 min away.
All summer long I take veggies and dip in my lunch. With a buttermilk herb dip that uses chives, tarragon, dill and mint. Basil is self evident: pizza.
And the mint is for mojitos.
