Change 1x Chainrings w/o Replacing Chain?

I was upgrading my MTB from an 1x8 40/11-34 setup to a 10 speed with an 11-40. I bought the new crankset and now I have the ability to run a 36t, 38t, or 40t (possibly) chainring.

I currently use my bike as an urban commuter/street bike but would like to take it out to trails if possible. I like the 40t for urban riding but might want to use the 36t if I ever ride Single track. Is it possible for me to measure my new chain with the 40t and be able to change to one of the smaller rings in the future w/o resizing the chain?
