All pre-10-speed Shimano bar end and downtube shifters have a friction position for the rear derailleur so you could use any of them too.

However, I also don't understand your dislike of indexing. Wait until you try using friction shifting on a 10-speed cassette. Unless you have the dexterity of a surgeon you will learn to appreciate indexing.
