Pre glued patches are a temporary emergency measure when you're not willing to carry the weight of a real kit and don't mind completely ruining the tube to get a couple more days out of it.
Strangely enough, I rode on Saturday on a bike with two tubes with pre-glued patches on them. One's had them on for two and a half years, the other for at least a year and a half. Finished a metric, with lunch on the way, and never had to re-pump.
It's all in the tube prep (sanding off the mold release). Though I did pick up another glue tube in yet another repair kit for the tubes waiting to be patched.
