Yea roof racks work out much cheaper if your vehicle comes with factory crossbars rather than needing to buy them.
My Outback has the factory cross bars that can be stored. They also have a curve to them, resulting in a lean to the outside for the bikes when you put a bike tray on them. As I use fork mounts I wasn't happy with that leaning, didn't want the fork clamp tacking that pressure at 70mph. I thus replaced the factory bars with Yakima Core bars (50") that are level. I needed the extra width in any case for a box plus 2 bikes.
