Yeah, I've had a similar experience. I'm close to your height, and started out on a 52 cm frame 8 years ago. At the time it seemed like a good fit, but as I've lost weight and became a stronger rider I find that I like my torso to be extended much more than that.
Not too long ago I was shopping for a new road bike and I figured I wanted a 54. Someone convinced me to try a 56 they had in stock: fit me like a glove, I can't imagine going to anything smaller.
