the analogy of my running shoes is the reason. After running 140 miles a month for 3 months, they still look good. However, the foam and materials break down. Thus, most runners I know replace them after 200-400 miles. Can you still wear them? Of course. I prefer to stay injury free though. The little things add up in endurance sports. In riding, I use my newer shorts for longer rides. I would bet the pads, like shoes, wear out and break down far before they look bad.
For me, good shoes for running. Good bibs/shorts for riding.
