When Trek got started in 1976, they only sold bare frames. We sold Trek frames from the beginning until late 1978 when they began producing complete bikes. They presented us with some unrealistic and unreasonable demands requiring us to stock an unacceptable number of bikes so we parted ways.

In the beginning you could order a Trek frame with or without a headset. Here's the price lists for Trek installed headsets:
