I do it all the time with an adapter and found it works best if you don't unscrew the presta stop nut the whole way. Like maybe leave it in the middle and then put your adapter on. A lot of pressure gauges need that small tip sticking out to engage. I'm sure there are some pencil gauges that are more finiky then others. I have a $4 Slime digital pencil gauge and works great.
