A couple of things you need to be sure of first.
Does the bike fit you well.
Are the other parts worn or going to need replacig soon enough. Does the gearing suit because you may have a 52 /42 chainrings which will limit your low gear options. Sometimes it can actually make more sense to just buy a new bike which is better suited to your needs.
If you are happy it shouldn't be difficult to find a suitable shifter which ultimately may be the cheapest option.
Also alot of times a squirt of wd40 will fix a shifter.
Shimano shifters from that era where very reliable and if it has low miles it's worth a try.
But the mechanic did say a part was broken
Bike I think is slightly big. My dad and I are roughly same size, both 30" inseam, he's 5'11 I'm about 5'9.5", but standing over the top tube is hitting but not by much. In trying to measure the frame I think it's a 56. I think my size is supposed to be more 54 or 52.
