I was at Port Authority bus terminal, and it was a madhouse because of the train outages. Normally, the place is hell on earth, and that made it even hellisher.

Yeah, I often have a lot of days when I intend to ride gently, but my legs really like pedaling hard, so I usually end up going hard. I guess there's nothing wrong with the fact that my body craves exercise and that I get it. Now that my commute is only 6-1/2 miles each way, I truly can ride gently when I really want to. There is a steep hill at the end of the ride to work, but it's not long or difficult. The rest of the route is extremely flat and therefore windy.
