I have a water bottle cage that attaches with velcro, made by Two Fish. In the photo, I also used an elastic band to attach the top of the bottle (one liter smartwater bottle) to the seatspost, you can see it was a tall bottle. You can't see it in the photo but I used some adhesive backed foam (used for weather stripping) on my frame so the bottle sat on the foam instead of sitting on the painted frame.

Also not seen in the photo is the pair of one liter water bottles I had in my saddle bag. It was the desert and I knew it would be a hot day, so I wanted plenty of water on the bike that day.

I have done this. Two varieties, one attaches to the seatpost, one clamps to the saddle rails. I have used both, but I generally do not use them if I have other options.

Here is one of them.
