i'm assuming you meant your co-worker's husband was also run off the road...
since these crews are consistently on the same 'job' - patchin Gibraltar holes - what are the chances that this was the same guy behind the wheel...
Gibraltar does continue for a short distance 'below' El Cielito where it meets mountain dr just above Sheffield res. and is the 'direct' route down to foothill rd intersect. Problem is its barely the width of an ample driveway there - maybe 15 to 18 ft, with some really tight radius bends. I hug the shoulder when on it cause it ain't wide enough for 2 avg cars to pass each other without one being in the dirt.
That section goes sortta southwest-ish and is what I take to mean 'going west'. Otherwise like you say, everything above El Cielito is really north/southbound and is reasonably wide for that lower section.

life is so tenuous. gotta make it happen every day
