Bikes: 1978 Trek TX700; 1978/79 Trek 736; 1984 Specialized Stumpjumper Sport; 1984 Schwinn Voyageur SP; 1985 Trek 620; 1985 Trek 720; 1986 Trek 400 Elance; 1987 Schwinn High Sierra; 1990 Miyata 1000LT

On my Trek 720 I went from friction barcons and a 5 speed Helicomatic (sometimes Phil Wood + Suntour Ultra 6 depending on wheels) to a 10 speed Phil Wood/Ultegra with Command Shifters.

It's great stuff - getting all those extra steps between gears.

I guess if you don't go the Brifter route- the 9 speed bar ends are still available. As far as what bike... I love the concept of *my bike* with this new fangled stuff on it.

And here you go: Retro roadies- old frames with STI's or Ergos
