I melted a tire on the way to Yosemite back in 1979 or so. Clamp on bumper rack to a 78 Honda Accord. Car had a straight pipe exhaust tip and the bike was pretty close to the car, lined up perfectly. Most hitch racks I've seen have the bikes pretty far aft of the back of the car.
