On some old tiagra shifters I have, they are the same with the cables coming out of the side. You can either disconnect the cables, which is a lot of work. Or take of the bar tape, slide the shifter off of the bar and remove them from the bottom. Neither is without it's drawbacks, but I hope that helps.
