I get up there for bird watching on a day trip once in a blue moon, but think that exploring the region from a bicycle would be a great way to get really acquainted with the place.
Spaghetti Legs Yeah, I talked to Gala last night, and even mentioned that I'd asked for the collective wisdom of the forumites regarding the situation! She's fine with me doing the tour because she knows it's something I have wanted to do for a long time, and is even fine with the century rides. She's not fine with them right now because there is clearly not enough time in the day to do everything. I understand, and won't be doing any more centuries after six day work weeks.
merziac Mostly everything is dialed back except for walking our dog and gardening. Those are responsibilities that cannot be ignored, and of which Gala partakes, so I'm fine there. In fact, it's time to walk Pippin! Have a nice Tuesday, everyone.

Oh, got it, I thought it was an organized/supported ride you were preparing for.
Well, in that case, it sounds like you're current level of fitness should be just fine. Shorter distances with good effort should keep you in shape to enjoy the tour and spend more time with the wife.
Win win!
