The issue with the spacing is probably because the original front over locknut width was 100mm only when the safety tabs are installed next to the locknuts, inside of the fork ends. These tabs add 4-6mm to the overall width so when removed the over locknut width appears much smaller. Schwinns of the 80s had these for almost all models, IIRC.
But yeah, your problem if you crashed and bent your fork or frame.
