I ride up there a couple times a year. Never done the lake loop due to traffic concerns but have done some other fantastic routes all leaving from Al Tahoe Blvd area

1) Al Tahoe, right on Pioneer Trail to Hwy 50 go left, left on Hwy 89,right on Hwy 88, left on Blue Lakes Road to the lakes and back. There are some side roads you can take once you get to 89 if you want and hook back up (S. Upper Truckee). This gets up over 8K feet. 68 miles, 4900 ft vertical

2) Al Tahoe, right on Pioneer Trail, to Hwy 50 go left, left on S.Upper Truckee, right on Lincoln Hwy (Old Meyers grade, this is the old Hwy 50 which is now peds/bikes only), Cross Hwy 50 going right, immediate left back on Lincoln Hwy, then right up one of a couple roads up to Echo Lakes. 25 miles, 1950 ft vertical

3) Pick through Tahoe to Hwy 89 and go right (there are various bike paths you can use to skirt some of the downtown traffic), left at Fallen Leaf Road, Left on Tahoe Mountain Road, Left on Angora Ridge up to end, back down and right on Tahoe Mountain Road, pick your way back to Hwy 50 and go left, then back home however. The view at the top of the ridge is amazing. This is a bit of rough road in my opinion and short dirt section. I bring my cross bike for this ride. Can't find stats on this one but I think it is 25 miles or so.

4) Another that is a ***** of a climb is Fountain Place Road which is off of Pioneer Trails. Mtn bikers get driven up this so they can ride down. I rode it up/down on my cross bike and it was great yet awful.. Don't have stats on this ride but not a long ride unless you connect to another

Sometimes I stitch a couple of these rides together (example I did Angora and then up to Echo lakes for a 37 mile, 3400 ft vertical). There are hard climbs on all of these routes (at least for me at 6'6", 225 lbs!), and aggravated by elevation

Hope this helps and have fun up there!
