I'm building up a do-whatever type bike and I might try one of those FSA energy 30/46 cranksets with a rival/force mix - too bad FSA locks you in to their bb386evo standard, but at least it works with threaded BBs. The cranks themselves aren't much to look at, but cheaper (by far) than a White Industries VBC setup. I'd go 11-36 and ultegra, but I hate the current shimano hood shapes with a passion.

Absoluteblack's two-ring spider chainrings are an option, too, but they mess around with chainline (they offset things 2.5mm in the wrong direction)
The BB386EVO concept is solid and has some choice and readily available. I had a FSA Omega with a 19mm spindle. There is exactly one choice for a replacement BB and It was reletively pricey.
