When my Shimano bar end broke, just the indexing, I used them for a while as friction only. I am very used to friction only since I had only known friction shifters before this particular bike. I decided to replace the shifters and got the "Silvers" from Rivendell. I already had the bar end housings, so I bought their downtube shifter kit and installed them in my bar end housings. I love them, they shift great. I have no desire to go back to the Shimano shifters, or any indexed shifter for that matter.
