The only time I've ever seen rims get dangerously hot was in a large group. Everyone constantly feathering the brakes, things get hot. I've seen blowouts on both carbon and Al.

If you are not in a pack and have the right brakes pads, I can't imagine a problem.

Caveat, I've never ridden Mt Diablo but have been (up then) down most of the big passes and the paved 14ers in Colorado with no issue. I can't imagine it's something you'd need special equipment to handle.
