It crossed my mind that when/if my current bike dies, I could build my own. I doubt I'd do that though. It's takes me forever to spec out parts. And I don't really have room for doing a years-long project of slowing building a bike. I'd probably be better off buying what I want, and then doing repairs myself.
I would say that thread illustrates pretty much the poorest way to go about building your own bike. The OP was driven mainly by appearance rather than function. He ended up with a far different bike than what he started out looking for and even then the result is a very odd looking bike.
Building a bike can be great fun if you have access to inexpensive compatible components and you also have access to the needed tools. I have a couple of very nice road bikes that I built up myself, but I was given the frames and was able to buy the components at prices very close to what a bike company would pay from the manufacturer. Otherwise I might have spent quite a bit more than I would have paid for a similar pre built bike.
