We just cc tour these days as my wife likes an ensuite which is a bit hard to manage when camping. We've done lots of camping tours when we were younger and still have all the gear to do it again if we want.
We are planning to do a ride around the Cabot Trail in late September most probably 2020 and we looked at camping as we thought it would give us more options for where to stay. Then we did a bit more research and found that we would need gear that was ok for sleeping in -5C. Our current sleeping gear is only good for +5C althoug

Fully loaded for camping we carry about 25kgs

CC touring we carry about 14kgs. you learn to pack really well when you ride a tandem
h we have camped in just below freezing when we've been caught out. The cost of fitting ourselves out to camp in the colder weather was more than it would cost us to stay in accomodation for the week that we would be riding the trail so it's just not worth it for us.
We get plenty of interaction with the locals where ever we ride as we tour on a tandem and it's a great conversation starter
