The battery fuel gauge remains inaccurate and, as you mention, will continue to operate long after the ‘low battery’ warning.
this is correct. After the last round of major updates the battery issue did get better but the icon is way off. I get about 7ish hours on mine before I get nervous about it dying. It’s good enough for me.
