Can a bike be beautiful and ugly at the same time?
I hope that my 1990 Trek is old enough to be classified at vintage. I figure that since it is made of steel and has lugs that it has got to be pretty close to being vintage. It was time to reconfigure this thing again and I did all of the work last night and this morning. A few years back I set this bike up with drop bars and 650b wheels. I was able to adjust the Tektro CR720 cantilevers up high enough to reach the 650b rims. Then last fall I decided that I wanted it to have fatter knobbier tires and so I switched out the 650b wheels with standard 26" mountain bike wheels and put the WTB Velociraptors on it. That brings us to last weekend when I sold my main mountain bike because I would like to buy a new one. So now I need a mountain bike to get me through until the 2019 models start coming out. So this bike has now come full circle and is once again configured as a normal, flat bar mountain bike.
I normally don't name my bikes but I'm referring to this one as Stacy because it reminds me of a girl in high school that wasn't very pretty but she had a nice rack.
There are 2 lessons to be learned from this little transition project. First, it pays to hoard bike parts. Second, always check your parts bin because you never know what you are going to find.
I was sort of in a bind and didn't want to spend a whole lot on a mountain bike. I saw this one hanging on the wall and it occurred to me that it wouldn't take a whole lot to transform it back to it's former glory. So I checked the parts bin and I it turns out that I had everything that I needed except for the handlebars and a 9 speed chain. There is a LBS that I know usually has a pretty good selection of parts from older bikes and so that guy sold me the handlebar for $5 and I went to another LBS (because it happens to be my favorite and those guys have done me some favors) and got a SRAM chain for $21.75. So the total cash outflow for this little project was $26.75. WOOHOO!!!
650b wheels w/ drop handlebars and bar end shifters.
Switched out the 650b wheels for 26" wheels with WTB Velociraptors
Replaced the drop bars with regular mtb bars and such
I have no idea what shifter this is but it was in my parts bin and is 9 speed compatible. The XT brake lever used to be part of an integrated brake-shift lever but someone cut it apart from the shifter and again I had it in my parts bin.
A couple of more parts that came from the parts bin
