I rode for years with toe clips and cleats. I tended to not cinch them up as tight as possible in case of emergency.
Today I still ride 7400 pedals with toe clips and Specialized Elite Touring shoes with no cleat. Foot stays pretty much in place and I just slide them out when I stop. The shoe is rigid enough to give good support but the sole is rubberized enough to stay in place. My setup might be called Fredericals in honor of the origin of the toe clip.John
