Right, it's a linguistic fossil. I'm sticking with my theory that the obvious name "click-in" didn't catch on because clicking was associated with a malfunctioning pedal or crank.
Some of the road pedal systems in use today were pioneered by ski binding companies, so maybe bike bindings or pedal bindings would be more apt.
