If you go to 52/36 and a 11-32 you will get both a higher highest gear and a lower lowest gear, but the difference is marginal, compared to what you have. Unless you tend to run out of high gears (spin out) I suggest sticking with the 50/34 and get a 11-32 cassette.
I haven't checked, but I think the other (albeit related) benefit is that he'd not only get the overall boost in gearing range, but also get this for each given chainring, meaning less FD shifts are also likely.
