Your local bike shop would probably appreciate your business and give you a good tune-up. After that, you can buy some tools and maintain the bike yourself.
That'll set him back $100 and doesn't get the OP to learn about his bike or any tools. May cost more than the bike is worth.
OP: clean it and ride it around the block to see if it fits at all and if you want to keep it before you invest more.
