All things in the right perspective. When things are moving quickly, these are the times where action cams shine. Of course you have to keep in mind that they're not designed for the perfectly composed shots since these harsh environments aren't conducive to a perfect composition, and come with some compromise. Their wide-angle action shot captures all the action in a "point and shoot" instant. I think of it as a decisive moment.

Stopping to take pics with my iPhone is much better. Although I've become quite adept at sliding it out of my framebag and taking photos on the go as well. There are some things I miss that I would like to have photos of - namely wild animals I cross paths with - but there's no way I'd get those unless running a production quality cam the entire ride anyway.
You said it. But maybe you might want to think of it as different, rather than better? A cell phones can take remarkable photos and video when you have the time to set things up, but they're the opposite of the sports/active camera.

I mounted the Gopro on the top of my handlebar at the beginning of the tour, but I ended up mounting it under the handlebar later

Also, I can always double-click the power button to access the camera apps so I never really had to unlock my phone.
Their versatility and flexibility are unparalleled.
