One rarely learns anything by leaving well enough alone.
I have a Super Grand Prix that came from the factory with an alloy two-piece post. The previous owner(s) moved the seat up and down several times over the course of 30 years or so and the post looked like someone went after it with a Dremel blind-folded. Since I took the time to remedy the problem on a previous project, I easily took care of the seat tube on the current one.
