Shimano SPD is probably the most ubiquitous. But almost any pedal system should work. Maybe peruse local shops and online and see whats cheap and readily available? I've only used Look delta and now Keo pedals since way back when. I'm used to them but they are the larger style cleats (like Shimano SPD-SL) and are not meant for walking (although I do a short walk to work in them). For the short walk, I've used the cleat covers which help. But the benefits for the larger cleats are no shoe hotspots and a fairly positive engagement with the pedal. Another benefit, is that the pedals and cleats can be fairly cheap to replace. I recently bought a pair of Look cleats for ~$31 from amazon.com and Look Keo Classic 2 pedals for ~$36 from merlincycles.com. You can also get some 3-rd party cleats for cheaper.

All three above would be $54 plus shipping. I usually like the grey cleats with 4.5 deg float. But you also have the option to get black for no float or red for 9 deg float.
