While most wouldn't consider it normal, it is a common enough thing to happen when things are needing attention on your bike. Do you remember what gears front and back you where in?

To much chain slack likely, but whether it's the chain too long, the rear DR cage not taking up slack quick enough because of dirt or bad spring or a lot of other stuff is hard to say with what little you tell of your bike and circumstances.
