i was wearing regular sneakers this ride and if i was clipped it i probably would have kept spinning to create force in the chain
Keeping tension on the chain is the correct technique when riding over rough ground. If a bump is big enough to throw you off the saddle and off the pedals, you're better off getting out of the saddle and absorbing the bump with your elbows and knees. Bonus points if you can do so while keeping the pedals turning.
