Yeah, this has long been well established, you gotta replace lost carbs and electrolytes beyond a certain point, not just the lost water, or performance suffers (potentially to the point of something medically serious).
These days, my rides are only running between 2 and 3 hours, and even in this Georgia climate with temps and humidity both running around 95, I haven't felt the need to supplement anything but water. (But, earlier today, on my longest and hilliest ride in ages, I did stop and buy a banana at a little grocery store.)
