Auto-wrap is shrink-fit vinyl over whole car. Water shouldn't be able to get underneath.

I know that the frames i wrapped with inner tube had permanent marks .... whether from chemicals leaching out of the tubes, or trapped moisture, or whatever. And yes, bar tape can hold water too .... quite well.

At some point, if the bike is going to be stored outside .... who cares? it will be eaten by the elements and then stolen. Why spend any money on the finish? or .... just rattle-can it with Rustoleum. Anything you use to wrap the frame Except a full vinyl auto wrap is going to case issues with the finish when it comes off .... but why put it on if it is meant to come off? If the point is to save the paint, why leave it outside? UV will eat the finish as much as rust will. And any bike stored outside needs to be washed and greased frequently, or it will eat itself .... friction and the abrasion caused by tiny sand particles between all the bearing surfaces will tear up the bike long before the faded paint peels.

I am personally Not a fan of folding bikes, but this is exactly the sort of situation where they, and only they, make sense. In a bike-unfriendly environment, a folder isn't a bike when not in use .... it can literally be stuffed in a large suitcase and stuck under the bed.

It sounds to me like this whole "save the bike" thing has gotten out of hand .... it has built up momentum which has carried itself past the boundaries of reason.

What is the actual goal? To keep the bike from being stolen? The only way to do that is to ride Walmart and lock it with military-grade. The bike has to be worth less than the risk and the required effort.

And even then ... if it outside overnight, and someone sees it every night .... some night someone will spend 8 hours with a set of tools and steal it just because.

If the point is protecting the finish ... well it is already scratched and dinged, right? So it will need to be refinished anyway to really look sharp. So ... wrap it in anything, and if it messes up the paint, after college is over, hit the thing with citra-strip and steel wool and take it to bare metal and do it the way you want.

If the idea is to protect what's left of the paint from further damage ... don't leave it outside in the elements. The whole bike will degrade, not just the paint.

An auto-wrap might cost $100 or more .... how much is the bike worth? Seems to me, it would be better to spend that money on refinishing it after college is over.

The initial premise was that the bike could be disguised in some way that would not compromise the already compromise finish, for the sake of avoiding theft. As you yourself note, that "camouflage" will not work---and the finish is already compromised. So what are we Actually discussing?
