The normal access from NY City to a paved rail trail running miles up into the two counties to the north is via a mile and a half of dirt through Van Cortlandt Park, which gets rather muddy when it's rained a lot, as it has this week.
There's of course a Strava segment for this:
https://www.strava.com/segments/1300895
and its southbound twin
https://www.strava.com/segments/1300901
Is there a way I can use this to deduce the trail conditions right now?
For example:
- Are fewer people riding this than normally would for a given day of the week? (but this might be influenced by assumptions more than ground reality)
- Are people who ride it often turning in notably slower times than their usual (ie, because they carried their bikes around mud puddles)?
