This seems to be the thread.... how about cheap tubulars, like Yellow Jersey 3/$50 deal? Too heavy, not enough performance? Asking because I picked up two nice tubular wheelsets recently and thinking of fitting out the Alpine with one of them. Is it worth the extra cash to get a much better tire, or would the budget-friendly version be "good enough" to have the whole tubular experience?
I will disagree with others - if you are going to run only one tubular wheelset, make them good tires for the experience. If you have more than one tubular wheeled bike then a value tire for the 'lesser' bike is where to save the $30-$40. You must shop tubulars sales, I use the UK online sites and biketiresdirect for their price matching of some deals at other sites.
