I've got a 48T chainring on my Stumpjumper.
But the frame was made in 1984, and there are two other chainrings...
The best way to find out whether your desired chainring would fit may be to look at the bike. For each tooth added to your chainring, the radius of the ring increases by about 2mm (assuming the teeth are profiled the same way). Look at how close the ring is to the chainstay, make an informed guess.
Keep in mind that a bigger ring could also require a longer chain.
