I've used cartridge bb's such as the old American Classic which had much longer threaded engagement with the bb shell and which were a little larger on the OD as well. These wouldn't fit frames that had relatively small ID relative to normal tolerances, so would likely save a shell that had threading stripped out by a typical cup/cone bb shell with shorter threaded length.
Another drawback to the AC bb was that the original tapping may not have gone deep enough, in which case contact with the ends of the frame tubes might occur.
One would have to check out the threaded length of today's popular cartridge bb's to see which ones might grab a good number of additional, non-stripped threads in the bb shell (surely some are longer in this regard than others).
