Thank you for your wise counsel. Avoidance is always best by preparation and care. As said in the original post, this is for emergency getting home -- from a rare hazard road cut that cannot be foreseen before I reach it on the riding road surface, and which a tire boot cannot repair to get me back to civilization and a replacement tire. Rare, yes, but I would like to carry one for touring.
