My goal is to upgrade to 9 speed and 700c while using as many spare parts from my small stash as is possible. I was expecting to cold set the rear frame to 130mm. My plan was for this to be a late fall/winter project.

While trolling the forum I read the thread "10-speeds on a 126mm hub SUCCESS" where miamijim converted 130mm hubs to 126mm ( 10-speeds on a 126mm hub SUCCESS ) My plan was to use an old Shimano 105 (1050) rear hub for my project. It had been converted to 7 speed hyperglide a long time ago. Using some of miamijim's measurements I became hopeful that I could keep the 126mm OLD without having to dish the wheel too much.

Today I secured a 8-9-10 speed freehub body (shimano 6700) and to my surprise I was able to simply replace the freehub body and mount the 9 speed cassette WITHOUT ANY CHANGE IN THE COLLECTION OF CONES, SPACERS, WASHERS AND LOCKNUTS. It slipped right into the dropouts and appears to have the clearance.

Here is a link to the schematic of the 1050 hub: http://si.shimano.com/pdfs/ev/EV-FH-1055-1093A.pdf .
This is a picture of the wheel with 9 speed cassette in the bike:

That is the original 5-6-7 speed chain and you can see there is clearance. This should improve with a 9 speed chain. SCORE! i'm having a little trouble believing this but it appears to be good to go. If this works out I have a 89 Schwinn Voyageur that I bought new and could really stand a rebuild/upgrade.

For the more experienced: Am I missing something? Has anyone else done this? Common knowledge?
This is pretty awesome. I’m curious how this magically worked for you. I mean, isn’t there a width difference between the 7 speed freehub body and the 10 speed freehub body?
