I know there are entire threads arguing this issue, but my thinking is as follows.
As long as the rim is narrower than base of the tire, any widening of the rim will make the tire taller. But once the rim becomes wider than the base of the tire, any widening of the rim will start making the tire shorter in height.
Seems fairly obvious to me, but people still argue about the issue endlessly.
I wasn't aware this was a debated issue so let's not get into it lol. But define "base of the tire" for me real quick.
