This is a very late response-- but I ended up picking up a 12-28 cassette, which was stated to be in the acceptable range for the 1055 short cage derailleur. It seems to be working just fine and it gave her a little more gearing. The 1055 crankset has 52/42 rings, and I have considered swapping the 42 for a 39, to give her even more gearing, but I haven't really looked into that yet.

But thanks for the info--- I will try that if it turns out we still need more.
