Well that is not as you described it originally but this makes a lot more sense. I did not mean to be harsh but I have seen lots of people the said they are going to ride again, spend the money then it sits there.

I still say speak to her. She might be perfectly happy with what she has. Maybe the money can be spent on something else like a bicycle vacation? Or maybe she wants something different from the bike you chose?

If you are dead set on a bike then I say make it clear (in writing) with the shop that you have an option of returning the bike if she makes another choice. Your only problem there with her having to choose from what the shop sells.

I wonder if the shop would agree to a refund? Maybe even minus a small service charge? That way you are covered both ways.
