There is a contradiction in that article. It states unequivocally that the 'nuovo record' 1046/A BB was never produced in X3. However, the tables clearly list a nuovo X3 spindle, complete with the slightly longer A, B and C dimensions. Something is amiss. Perhaps what happened is that you could no longer buy a complete X3 bottom bracket, but you could still order a spindle to fit the new rifled thicker cups. Speculation though. I've certainly never seen a triple spindle for nuovo record BB, and I'm inclined to say at least practically speaking they may as well not exist. Campy triples are something I associate with the early 70s, but like I said, by the late 70s and into the early 80s, if you wanted a triple most went with TA, Sugino, Phil (BB only), or maybe Avocet/Ofmega.

Conclusion, either acquire the early original flavor record thin cups and x3 spindle, or run something else.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see a contradiction. The Nuovo Record table (Chart 4) for rifled cups does not list an X3 spindle. The "New Style" (meaning Post-CPSC) Record table (Chart 3) is for spindles to be used with thin cups. You can tell this because the A dimension is the same as in Chart 2. So I think the X3 spindle was never made for thick cups, but they did make a 4 mm longer version for post-CPSC cranks.

On my Gemini I used a pre-CPSC spindle (68-SS-120 X3-Z) with a post-CPSC Nuovo Record crank, but surprisingly the chainline is good (about 45mm to the middle ring). There is enough clearance between the 34t inner ring and the chainstay, and the Nuovo Record front derailleur has no problem reaching the outer ring.
